Rebuilding the external services edge for critical, real-time workloads

Oil & gas exploration & production operator

Oil & Gas →

The operator's external services edge, the layer that safely exposes internal systems to the outside world, needed modernizing. Payroll, business analytics, and a sensor-fusion ecosystem streaming real-time data from drilling operations were all waiting to go live on it. We redesigned the edge around modern application delivery controllers and onboarded each of them securely.

The challenge

Every organization has an external services edge, the layer that decides how the outside world reaches what is inside. Most of the time nobody thinks about it, right up until it becomes the thing standing between the business and something it wants to do. For this operator, that moment had arrived. The edge had aged into a liability that was harder to secure than it should be and awkward to extend. Nobody wanted to hang sensitive new workloads on it. And the workloads waiting in line were not trivial. Payroll. Business analytics. A sensor-fusion ecosystem streaming real-time data straight off drilling operations. Each one carried its own mix of business sensitivity and operational risk, and none of them could go live on an edge the team didn’t trust.

And the stakes ran in two directions at once. Get the edge wrong on the security side and you expose sensitive systems and live operational data to the outside world. Get it wrong on availability and payroll doesn’t run and the drilling telemetry the business depends on goes dark. The margin between those two failures was thin.

What we did

We redesigned the external services edge around modern application delivery controllers. Now it had proper load balancing and clean TLS termination, with security controls built in rather than bolted on. That turned the edge into something the business could build on instead of work around.

Then we proved it by moving real production workloads onto it. Payroll and business analytics came first, onboarded carefully and with minimal disruption, because those are exactly the systems people notice the instant they wobble. Next came the sensor-fusion ecosystem that streams real-time data from drilling operations, delivered securely so that live operational data reaches the analysts and decision-makers who need it without widening the attack surface. Real-time operational data is only an asset if it arrives securely. Otherwise it’s a liability with a nice dashboard.

Why it mattered

A modern edge is not the headline anyone celebrates, but it’s what lets a business say yes. Payroll runs without drama. Analysts and leaders get the live drilling data they need to make calls, delivered through a channel the security team can stand behind. And the next critical system that has to be exposed becomes a routine onboarding rather than a fresh argument about risk. Quiet infrastructure that lets the business move faster is worth more than it ever gets credit for.

The range it took

Edge and security architecture is only worth anything if it survives contact with real, critical workloads. On this engagement we designed the edge and then earned our confidence in it, onboarding payroll, analytics, and live drilling telemetry one careful step at a time. Working across both the architecture and the messy details of each system (protocols, owners, risk profile) is what let us modernize the edge without ever putting sensitive operations at risk.

What we delivered

A modern edge first, then the critical systems that depend on it.

We led this

External services edge redesign

Redesigned the external services edge around modern application delivery controllers, improving availability, security, and how cleanly internal systems are exposed to the outside world.

We delivered this

Onboarding critical business systems

Brought critical systems onto the new edge, including payroll and business analytics, safely and with minimal disruption to the business.

We delivered this

Secure sensor-fusion onboarding

Onboarded a sensor-fusion ecosystem that streams real-time data from drilling operations, delivered securely so operational data reaches the business without widening the attack surface.

The outcome

The operator now runs a modern, secure external edge that exposes its critical systems cleanly and carries real-time drilling data to the people who need it, without compromising security. The edge went from a constraint the business routed around to a platform it can confidently keep adding to.
